Microsoft announced this week that it has signed India's first renewable energy deal, a small-scale solar power purchase agreement
signed by Atria Power, Karnataka, India.
Microsoft said it has signed its first renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA)
in India.
Under the agreement, Microsoft will purchase 3 megawatts (MW) of solar power from renewable energy supplier Atria Power, which is designed to power the company's new office building in Bangalore and will account for 80 percent
of the building's electricity consumption.
The PPA agreement is also part of a plan developed by the Karnataka government to encourage investment in local solar businesses to help achieve India's target
of increasing solar power generation to 100 GW by 2022.
Anant Maheshwari, President of Microsoft India, said: "Investing in local solar to help drive the construction of a new office building in Bangalore is good for Microsoft, good for India and good
for the environment.
We are proud to deepen our long-term relationship and investment
in India through this agreement.
" This deal will help us achieve sustainable development and support the development of India's solar industry, making it easier and more reliable for the entire country to access clean electricity
.
" ”
"Microsoft, like India, has an ambitious commitment to using more renewable energy," added
Rob Bernard, Microsoft's chief environmental strategist.
"By purchasing local solar energy to meet some of our local electricity needs, we are not only meeting our goals, but also supporting the development of
the local clean energy industry.
This growth has led to cleaner electricity capacity, which will help India meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, reduce carbon emissions, and provide clean electricity
to a growing population.
We are proud to play a small role
in this energy transition in India.
”
This is not only Microsoft's first renewable energy deal in India, but also one of the company's first sustainability projects in Asia, following an announcement in Singapore last week when Microsoft signed an agreement to acquire 100 percent of
the country's largest electric solar project.
Specifically, Microsoft will receive 60 megawatts of electricity from its solar portfolio, which spans hundreds of rooftops in Singapore to power
Microsoft data centers in the region.
