Image: The process of using a capacitive deionization cell to remove dissolved boron

80% of Israel's drinking water is desalinated water from the Mediterranean

Desalination is the process of removing mineral particles (salt) from seawater to make it suitable for human drinking and irrigation

The most common method of desalination is through membranes-a sieve that allows water to pass through, while blocking other particles based on their size or charge

Under the guidance of Professor Matthew Suss of the School of Mechanical Engineering and Technology, PhD students Amit Shocron and Eric Guyes, together with collaborators from Wageningen University and Wetsus, developed a new modeling technique that uses capacitive deionization to predict The behavior of boron in the desalination process

Amit Shocron developed the theoretical framework that allowed this breakthrough, and Eric Guyes built the experimental setup

The method developed by the team can also be used to solve other water treatment challenges, such as the removal of drug residues and herbicides that are difficult to remove by traditional methods
