Lithuanian and Polish transmission operators Litgrid and PSE recently signed and reached an agreement to install a Lithuanian-Polish submarine high-voltage DC cable as part of the synchronization of the power system of the Baltic states with that of
continental Europe.
Litgrid said that under the agreement, the two companies committed to begin preparations for the installation of a submarine cable called Harmony Link
.
According to the plan, the cable will be synchronized
through the existing Lithuanian-Polish LitPol Link in 2025.
The so-called synchronous compensators will be installed at hydroelectric power stations
in the three Baltic states.
The synchronization project could cost around 1.
4 billion euros, with the EU expected to allocate 75 percent of the funds
.
According to Lithuanian operators, this submarine cable project is the first step in a political agreement on the synchronization of the power grids of the Baltic states with those of continental Europe, signed in June by the leaders of the European Commission, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland
.
The Baltic power grid remains part of the BRELL ring network, which also includes Russia and Belarus, and remains dependent on Moscow's control center and Russia's power system
