Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammation, demyelination and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system.

Our group recently completed a 30-year longitudinal, clinical, and MRI follow-up study.

In this study, the relationship between regional brain atrophy and 30-year clinical outcome was explored.

From 1984 to 1987, 132 patients with CIS suggestive of MS were prospectively recruited, and clinical evaluation and MRI were performed at baseline, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, 14 years, 20 years, and 30 years Brain scan.

    Nine Hole Test

The existing volumetric MRI analysis methods cannot be used for baseline, 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year data, so linear measurement is used.

Measuring the width of the third ventricle (TVW) is an established technique related to the long-term disability progression of MS.

Changes in disability and atrophy within 30 years after CIS

At the age of 30, 27 subjects were still classified as clinically isolated syndrome, 34 were converted to relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, 26 were converted to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, and 16 died of multiple sclerosis Sclerosis.

The results of this study show that local brain atrophy within 5 years of clinically isolated syndrome indicates progressive multiple sclerosis or related death, which will lead to disability after 25 years.
