KEK, the Kosovo electricity company, said this week it would receive a €76 million grant from the European Union's Preparatory Admission Auxiliary Mechanism (IPA) to finance projects
aimed at reducing pollution from Kosovo's coal-fired power plant B.
KEK said the project is expected to replace electrostatic precipitators
at the Kosovo B power plant.
The company said that after the completion of the project, KSOVO Plant B will be operated according to EU standards by 2021, and the EU office in Kosovo is in the final stages
of project preparation.
Luigj Imeri, head of Kosovo's coal-fired power plant B, said the implementation of the project is expected to begin
within six months.
Over the past decade, KEK has invested around 60 million euros
in environmental improvement projects.
In Kosovo, about 98 percent of electricity comes from two old, inefficient and polluting lignite power plants, Kosovo A and B
.
Kosovo's residents often suffer from power shortages
due to insufficient electricity, an aging power grid and theft.
In May 2018, energy group ContourGlobal and the Kosovo government signed a contract for the construction and long-term maintenance of Kosova e Re, a 500-megawatt coal-fired power plant costing about US$1.
3 billion, but the project was recently cancelled
