changes in the uterus lay the foundation for the occurrence of pediatric kidney tumors. A recent study published in the journal Science found that kidney cancer in children usually occurs in tissues that are prone to cancer during embryonic development.
is the most common form of kidney cancer in children, mainly in children under 5 years of age. To track the origins of cancer, Sam Behjati and colleagues at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Hinkston, UK, sequenced tumor samples and the genomes of non-cancerous kidney tissue.
researchers found that in nearly two-thirds of children with Wilms tumors, cancer-related DNA variants were present in both non-cancerous kidney tissue and tumor tissue. But these mutations were not found in blood samples, suggesting that the changes occurred during kidney development and were not genetic.
some children have Wilmsoma in their left and right kidneys. The team found that some of these cases occurred during embryonic development, before the cells that produced each kidney split each other.
results suggest that many tumors are caused by large amounts of tissue fragments that contribute to cancer, rather than by a small number of abnormal cells in normal tissue, the authors said. (Source: Jin Nan, China Science Journal)
