According to a review of all available evidence, Ketamine treatment has a rapid short-term effect on reducing symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts
A systematic review led by the University of Exeter and funded by the Medical Research Council analyzed the evidence in 83 published research papers
Similarly, single or multiple doses of ketamine can cause a moderate to large reduction in suicidal thoughts
Merve Mollaahmetoglu, lead author at the University of Exeter, said: "Our study is the most comprehensive review of the growing evidence for the therapeutic effect of ketamine to date
For other mental illnesses, including anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, early evidence suggests the potential benefit of ketamine therapy
This review published in the British Open Journal of Psychiatry combines evidence from a growing field of research on the potential benefits of ketamine for diseases for which effective treatments are limited
The effect of ketamine on depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts is supported by a large number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses that provide a detailed overview of research on a specific topic
However, the therapeutic effect of ketamine on mental illnesses other than depression and suicidal thoughts is based on a few studies that did not randomize patients into different treatment groups
The authors pointed out some difficulties in this research field, and they suggested that future research should seek to solve these difficulties
There are still many unsolved mysteries in the research field about the optimal dose, route of administration and dosage of ketamine therapy
In addition, the importance of the acute subjective effects of ketamine in its therapeutic benefits has not been fully explored
