    Japan's NEC undertakes construction of the Chennai-Andaman and Nicobar Islands submarine cable systems

    NEC, a Japanese multinational information technology services and product provider, has signed a cooperation agreement with India's Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) to build a turnkey project for an undersea cable system connecting Chennai and the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Islands
    .

    Under the agreement, NECTI, the Indian arm of NEC of Japan, signed a purchase order to design, supply, install, test and implement the submarine cable project, with a total length of approximately 2,300 km and capable of carrying 100Gb/s light waves
    .

    According to a statement released by NEC, this submarine cable system will provide the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with enough bandwidth to support voice and data connections to enable e-government initiatives such as the establishment of enterprise and e-commerce facilities

    The system will also assist educational institutions in sharing knowledge and will play an important role
    in advancing the vision of Digital India.

    Anupam Shrivastava, chairman and managing director of BSNL, said in a statement, "BSNL is delighted to have chosen NEC to implement this project
