We observed a combination of two recognized histological criteria for psoriasis, (1) fragmentation and separation of the parakeratinized stratum corneum, and (2) epidermal hyperplasia with elongation of the reticular ridges, similar to those in the modern Latin alphabet.
Methods | This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Cabnes University Hospital and the Salamanca Institute for Biological Studies
To evaluate the effectiveness of ñsign in daily clinical practice, we randomly selected patients (case group) with a histological diagnosis of psoriasis in our hospital database (November 1, 2021) or those with a previous diagnosis other than psoriasis Biopsy specimens of skin lesions from patients with inflammatory skin disease (control group)
RESULTS: Biopsies from 136 patients were analyzed
Figure Micrograph of a biopsy specimen from a psoriatic skin lesion
The granulation sign in the specimen is formed by the sum of the fragmentation of the parakeratinized stratum corneum (top) and the regularly elongated proliferation of the reticular ridge (bottom) (hematoxylin-eosin staining, original magnification × 200)
Table Absolute and relative frequencies of n symbols in the patients studied
Discussion | In dermatopathology, the diagnostic process is based on the identification of histological patterns and their correlation with clinical data
System 2 (slow, conscious, laborious, consequential) thinking is activated when love at first sight is not possible
In this qualitative study, we propose the ñsign as a visual cue for the histopathological diagnosis of psoriasis based on the sum of two well-characterized histological criteria
In conclusion, ñsign may be a useful mnemonic tool for dermatologists, and even experienced physicians, when distinguishing between psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases
