Recently, two major environmental organizations in the United States, the North American Insecticide Action Network (PANNA) and the National Resource Protection Board (NRDC), filed a lawsuit against the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), demanding that the EPA introduce regulations banning chlorpyrifos
.
Chlorpyrifos is a neurotoxic pesticide
that can affect the brain development of fetuses, infants and children.
It can cause nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and in severe cases, respiratory paralysis and even death
.
The EPA introduced regulations in 2000 prohibiting the use of chlorpyrifos in domestic life, except
in packaging used to protect children from ant and cockroach bites.
In 2007, environmental groups petitioned the EPD to ban chlorpyrifos on all products
.
The EPA, however, did not respond
.
The lawsuit is part of a pressure on the EPA by environmental groups to issue a revised human health risk assessment for chlorpyrifos in December 2014
.
