BASF's lightweight polyurethane protects utility poles from typhoons
BASF recently presented composite technologies and other innovative solutions
such as lightweight polyurethane utility poles and fiber winding at the 20th China International Composites Industry Technology Exhibition.
The new poles made with BASF's Elastolit® polyurethane composition and fiber wrapping technology increase wind resistance by at least 2.
5 times
compared to common medium-pressure concrete poles.
This is mainly due to the excellent bending strength
of the Elastolit?.
In addition, the pole is easier to install and more suitable for use in
mountainous and hilly areas.
Each new pole weighs only 250 kg and can be handled and installed manually; Even in areas with harsh terrain, installation spacing of around
120 meters can be achieved.
Polyurethane has proven to be an ideal resin material
for fiber winding.
Fiber winding refers to a process
that uses resin materials such as fibers and polyurethane to wind a mandrel to form a hollow ring composite material.
This efficient process can be used to produce low-cost, lightweight, high-strength composites
.
