High-performance PPS booster engine continues to reduce weight
Solvay (Solvay) has announced that its high-performance Ryton® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) will be used in the core component
of the Polimotor 2 engine water pump.
The Pierburg CWA 400 electric pump is manufactured by KSPG AG with integrated blade and stator insulators and molded with Ryton R-4 PPS
.
It is a 40% glass fiber reinforced PPS compound that offers excellent chemical resistance, low moisture absorption and good dimensional stability
at high temperatures.
The Polimotor 2 project aims to design and manufacture a new generation of all-plastic engines
for 2016.
Ryton® R-4 PPS has long-term reliable performance at temperatures up to 220°C (428°F) and can withstand brief peak temperatures
up to 265°C (509°F).
In addition to the dimensional stability necessary to ensure efficient and reliable pump operation under high-pressure competition conditions, the company's PPS compounds offer excellent chemical and heat resistance, making them ideal for automotive thermal management systems
that are frequently exposed to engine coolants.
Ryton® R-4 PPS is comparable to metal pump components and is a lightweight alternative that helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness
.
"Automotive OEMs are increasingly focusing on more efficient electric water, oil or vacuum pumps to continuously reduce CO2 emissions," said Brian Baleno, Global Automotive Business Development Manager, Solvay Specialty Polymers.
