Ford/Samsung join forces to develop next-generation automotive battery technology
Ford and Samsung, a subsidiary of South Korea's Samsung, recently announced that they will collaborate on next-generation battery technology
for non-hybrid vehicles.
Recently, the two companies have been developing a "dual battery system"
in which lithium batteries are used with lead-acid batteries.
This dual battery system allows for greater fuel
savings for non-hybrid vehicles.
Ford has hinted that this dual-battery system will soon go into production
.
In addition, Ford and Samsung SDI are working on ultra-lightweight lithium-ion batteries, which will one day replace lead-acid batteries
.
Ultra-lightweight lithium batteries weigh more than 40% less than existing lead-acid batteries, or reduce weight by 12 pounds (5.
4 kg).
Ford says the battery, combined with other weight-cutting solutions, will lead to a reduction in the weight of the car while saving space, thereby improving the car's energy efficiency and performance
