LANXESS has recently supplied innovative bio-based Keltan Eco EPDM rubber for the production of sealing products from Freudenberg GmbH in Germany
.
Up to 70% of the ethylene in Keltan Eco EPDM rubber comes from sugar cane, and its properties are comparable to traditional EPDM rubber
.
Christian Widdershoven, Head of the Keltan Elastomers product line at LANXESS's Performance Elastomers business unit, said: "Keltan Eco EPDM rubber not only offers the proven technical properties of Kellan EPDM rubber, but also reduces our dependence on
fossil resources.
Because the raw material is derived from renewable sugar cane, the product has a much
lower carbon footprint than petroleum-based polymers.
"
Rubber products based on Keltan Eco polymers can be used to encapsulate coolants, steam, synthetic hydraulic fluids, brake fluids and aviation hydraulic fluids
.
The newly developed material is able to withstand temperatures up to 150°C and has excellent compression retention
.
Freudenberg Sealing Technologies uses Keltan Eco polymers with 45% renewable content and meet stringent fluid transport requirements to effectively reduce the carbon footprint
of the manufacturing process.
