A few days ago, the European Union Environmental Design Regulatory Committee voted to reach a resolution to postpone the deadline for phasing out halogen bulbs from 2016 to 2018
.
The Commission said that halogen bulbs are inefficient and that new technologies such as LED bulbs do have more potential for power savings, so it agreed to phase out halogen bulbs
by 1 September 2016.
However, after analyzing the lighting market and technological developments, the European Commission believes that it is too early to fully replace halogen bulbs with LED technology by the above date, and 2018 is a more appropriate deadline
.
Member States therefore agreed to extend the deadline by two years
.
As of September 1, 2018, some non-directional supply voltage halogen bulbs (mainly pear-type bulbs) can no longer be introduced to the market
.
However, this resolution does not affect directional halogen lamps, such as spotlights and halogen bulbs
commonly used in desk lamps and floodlights.
In addition, the new measures will not apply to products that have already been placed on store shelves, which can continue to be sold until they are sold out
.
