Germany sets the highest threshold
for shale gas frackingOn April 1, Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet signed a draft law imposing a ban
on controversial shale gas fracturing.
Hydraulic fracturing uses a mixture of chemicals and water to impact rock formations at high pressure to release natural gas
.
Concerned about the risk of contaminating drinking water with the technology, German Environment Minister Barbara Hendrix said the new law would set the toughest conditions for
fracking.
The new law, which awaits parliamentary approval, will ban shale gas hydraulic fracturing altogether in the coming years, allowing only scientific test drilling with a rigorous assessment of risks and environmental
impacts.
