The Indonesian government has completed construction of its 13,000-kilometer nationwide Palapa Ring fibre optic network, which connects Sabang in the west with Merauke in the east, and connects the northernmost island of Miangas to the southernmost island
of Rote.
The network was completed in two parts, with the West Palapa Ring completed in March 2018 and the recently completed East Palapa Ring network comprising about 6,878 kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure

Speaking in Jakarta on October 14, the Indonesian President said: "Today, I officially launched the Palapa Ring network, which connects 514 regions and cities in Indonesia.

Local media said that the completion of the Palapa Ring fiber optic network covering the whole country means that the quality of domestic Internet services will rise to a new level, greatly improving the speed of Internet access and public infrastructure services
such as e-government, e-education, and e-health.
