On July 25, European grid operator TenneT said that investment in high-voltage grids in the Netherlands and Germany rose 20 percent to 904 million euros in the first half of 2018 as the company tried to keep up with the rapid expansion of solar and wind energy
.
In the first half of the year, TenneT invested 904 million euros in the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and Germany
Earlier this year, TenneT said it expected to invest 28 billion euros in new infrastructure over the next 10 years
.
Connecting the large new wind and solar farms that Germany and the Netherlands plan to build on land and offshore requires such infrastructure
.
Both countries say they will get most of their energy
from renewables by 2050.
TenneT CEO Mel Kroon said in a statement: "The energy transition is gaining
momentum.
While the Netherlands has been lagging behind Germany, it is expected to catch up soon
.
”
In the Netherlands, TenneT is studying an offshore grid to connect a total of 11.
5 GW of offshore wind capacity to the onshore high-voltage transmission grid
by 2030.
In Germany, TenneT is also expanding the connection of offshore wind farms to onshore grids, while preparing to build "electric roads" to transmit hundreds of kilometers of wind energy
from north to south.
TenneT said its revenue remained stable in the first half of 2018 at around €2 billion
.
Gross profit fell 12% to €699 million
due to regulatory changes in the Netherlands.
