According to the Italian renewable energy association Anie Rinnovabili based on data provided by the country's grid operator Terna, in the first half of this year, Italy's new installed capacity of photovoltaics was 191 MW, down 18%
from the same period last year.
Among them, Italy registered 36.
6 MW and 37.
7 MW of photovoltaic power generation capacity
in May and June, respectively.
In March last year, about 60 large solar parks in Italy were connected to the grid to generate electricity, and in the first six months of this year, despite multiple announcements from local and international developers, no large-scale solar power plants
were completed.
However, developments in the first half of this year are almost identical to those registered in the first half of 2016, when 201 MW of new PV systems were connected to the
grid.
This means that, in addition to the exceptional results in March 2017, the country maintained a steady growth rate of about 30 MW per month, mainly driven
by the residential and industrial and commercial segments.
Anie's data makes it abundantly clear that residential installations of no more than 20 kilowatts dominate the Italian solar sector, with a new installed capacity of around 83.
5 megawatts
.
Overall, Italy's cumulative PV capacity reached 19.
7 GW
by the end of June 2018.
Meanwhile, Terna reported that solar power generation in the first half of this year was 12,749 GWh, accounting for 8% of Italy's total electricity generation, but thermal power accounted for more than
49% of total demand.
