Solar Energy Insights 2018 annual review report released Wednesday by the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA) and market research firm Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables showed that the United States added 10.
6 GW of new solar PV capacity in 2018, a slight decrease from the installed level in 2017, but the market is expected to rebound
in the next few years.
The report also shows that the country's utility-scale solar PV (before the Trump administration's 30% tariff on imported solar cells and modules) PV sector will grow more than initially forecast
.
"The solar industry experienced many bumps in 2018, largely due to unnecessary tariffs on solar cells and modules, but this report still finds optimism," said Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of SEIA.
It is clear that the next decade will be a significant increase
.
”
The U.
S.
residential market rebounded a year later, with the sector contracting 15 percent but growing 7 percent
in 2018.
The U.
S.
residential market has now posted five consecutive quarters of modest growth,?? The fourth quarter of 2018 saw the industry's largest quarterly growth in two years, with nearly 315,000 homes adding solar energy
.
On the other hand, the U.
S.
non-residential sector declined by 8%, while the utility-scale sector also contracted slightly due to the greater impact of the uncertainty over the Section 201 tariffs
.
Overall, solar PV accounted for 29% of all new generation, with a slightly lower
share than in 2017 due to a surge in new natural gas projects earlier this year.
Austin Perea, senior solar analyst at Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables, said: "After a rapid decline in residential solar in 2017, growth in 2018 was driven by a diverse mix of national and regional installers
.
With the shift to more efficient sales channels, national and regional installers exceeded expectations in California and Nevada, which drove the largest share
of residential growth in 2018.
”
Despite mixed results in 2018, Wood Mackenzie and SEIA report forecast stronger growth from 2020 to 2022
.
The total installed capacity of solar photovoltaic power generation in the United States is expected to increase by 14% in 2019, reaching 15.
8 gigawatts (GW)
of annual installed capacity.
