According to the latest official statistics released by the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten), Sweden's operating solar PV capacity increased from 231 MW at the end of 2017 to 411 MW at the end of last year
.
The data shows that 2018 was the best year for solar development in the country's history, with 180 MW of solar power facilities connected to the grid, compared to 91 MW in 2017 and just 13 MW
in 2016.
Overall, around 25,500 PV arrays are currently installed in Sweden, of which around 10,000 were completed
in 2018 alone.
PV projects exceeding 1 MW accumulate about 17 MW.
In 2017, the cumulative size of small solar parks reached 8 MW
.
The Swedish Energy Agency also revealed that photovoltaic systems under 20 kW account for 46% of the country's total solar capacity and 84%
of its total installations.
Last year's strong growth was due to falling prices for photovoltaic systems, as well as a higher
budget for solar discounts implemented by the Swedish government last year.
Between 2017 and 2018, the Swedish government implemented several measures to revive the PV market after the market
slowed down in 2016.
These include the elimination of solar taxes on commercial PV and the removal of rooftop PV building permits
.
However, the relevant measures of the Swedish government in 2019, including reducing the discount rate and limiting the tax refund program, may lead to a slowdown
in growth.
