According to the 2019 renewable electricity statistics released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in 2018, for the first time, total renewable energy generation reached one-third of the total installed electricity capacity, or 2,351 GW
, driven by the continued expansion of solar and wind power generation.
In 2018, renewables accounted for 84% of new capacity, bringing hydropower to less than 50% of total electricity to 1,172 GW, and wind and solar to 564 GW and 480 GW
respectively.
Other renewable energy sources include 121 GW of bioenergy, 13 GW of geothermal energy and 500 MW of ocean energy (tidal, wave and oceanic).
Renewable energy generation in 2018 increased by 7.
9%, or 171 GW
, compared to the same period of the previous year.
Regionally, Asia accounted for 61% of the total number of new renewable energy installations, and the installed capacity of renewable energy increased by 11.
4%.
Oceania grew the fastest, with an increase of 17.
7%
in 2018.
Africa grew by 8.
4%, ranking third
after Asia.
While non-renewable generation capacity in Europe, North America and Oceania has declined by about 85 GW since 2010, Asia has increased by 725 GW and the Middle East by 100 GW
over the same period.
These amounts are roughly the same as the
global expansion of non-renewable capacity during this period.
Since 2000, non-renewable generation capacity has increased by about 115 GW per year (on average), with no clear upward or downward trend
.
