Bloomberg New Energy Finance BNEF recently said that since the first six months of 2018, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for lithium-ion batteries has fallen by 35% to $187/MWh
.
For projects put into construction this year, the LCOE of solar photovoltaic power generation was $57/MWh, down 18%
from the same period last year.
However, the recent decline in solar LCOE occurred mainly in the third quarter of 2018, rather than earlier this year, as mid-year changes in China's PV policy left the global market left.
Recent analysis also shows that the benchmark LCOE for offshore wind has fallen by 24% over the past year, while the LCOE for onshore wind has fallen by 10%.
BNEF said these "staggering" cost reductions show that lithium-ion batteries and offshore wind "are now at the centre of the global energy transition"
.
"The cost competitiveness of these low-carbon options has improved dramatically due to technological innovation, economies of scale, intense price competition and manufacturing experience," said Elena Giannakopoulou, Head of Energy Economics at BNEF, "Since 2010, LCOE per megawatt-hour for onshore wind, solar PV and offshore wind has fallen by 49%, 84% and 56%
respectively.
According to recent projects, LCOE for lithium-ion battery storage has fallen by 76% since
2012.
”
BNEF said the cost drop in lithium-ion batteries is particularly exciting because it creates a wealth of new opportunities
to balance renewable energy and large-scale power generation installations.
