The International Energy Agency (IEA) reportedly said in its 2018 World Energy Investment Report that the low electricity prices recently found in auctions of renewable energy projects could pose risks
to the development of future projects in India.
It said that the risks to renewable energy investments generally fall into two categories: project development risks and operational risks
.
These risks can pose challenges
to investments by reducing the availability of financing, increasing the cost of capital, or delaying project development.
The average price of 25-year contracts for solar PV projects in 2017 has fallen by about 50 per cent over the past two years, approaching Rs 3 per kWh in 2017, the same as
the first tender for onshore wind, the report said.
The government of Uttar Pradesh recently cancelled a 1,000 MW solar reverse auction
held earlier July 11.
According to insider sources, this may be because the state government believes that the project is
overoffered.
