Recently, researchers from the American Cancer Institute (ACS) analyzed data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to assess the overall cancer and the top 15 cancers in the United States in the past 50 years (1971-2019).
The results of the study show that in the past 50 years, the overall cancer mortality rate in the United States has dropped significantly; among the top 15 cancers, the mortality rate of 12 cancers has dropped significantly
The study pointed out that the top 15 cancer deaths in the United States accounted for 81% of the total cancer deaths
Overall, in the past 50 years, the overall cancer mortality rate in the United States has dropped from 198.
Among the top 15 cancers, the mortality rate of 12 cancers has decreased, and the three cancers with the largest decline are gastric cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer.
In addition, among the top 15 cancers, the death rate of 3 cancers has increased
The researchers analyzed that since 1971, the significant reduction in overall and most cancer mortality rates is related to a variety of factors, including improvements in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment
Advances in surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, precision medicine, and combination therapies have helped reduce the mortality rate of most cancers
Another factor associated with the overall decline in cancer mortality is the decline in smoking rates
In terms of specific cancer types, the decline in breast cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer mortality is partly due to the increase in screening for precancerous lesions and early cancer
The main reason for the decline in breast cancer deaths is related to adjuvant chemotherapy
The decline in lung cancer, oral and pharynx cancer, and bladder cancer mortality is largely related to the decline in the number of smokers
The increase in pancreatic cancer mortality may be related to the increase in obesity in the United States and the lack of real progress in pancreatic cancer prevention, early detection and treatment
The study finally emphasized that although the overall and multiple cancer mortality rates have declined significantly in the past 50 years, people can do better, such as maintaining a healthy weight and reducing obesity; actively participating in cancer screening, including lung cancer , Breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and cervical cancer, etc.
Researchers said that fighting cancer and reducing mortality is a "marathon", not a "sprint sprint," which requires long-term persistence
