▎Editor of WuXi AppTec's content team In 2020, the number of new breast cancer cases in the world surpassed lung cancer for the first time, becoming the most common cancer in the world.
However, with the advancement of medical technology and the popularization of new breast cancer treatment strategies, the survival rate of patients has been greatly improved.
But at the same time, breast cancer survivors also face the risk of breast cancer recurrence, second primary cancer, and more susceptible to cardiovascular disease, which greatly increases the risk of death.
How can we help breast cancer survivors extend their lives and reduce the risk of death? Previous studies have found that regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with an increased risk of death for breast cancer survivors; while drinking coffee or tea is associated with a lower risk of death.
A recent study published in the British Journal of Cancer added evidence for an association between drinking tea or coffee and a reduced risk of death among breast cancer survivors.
The results of the study showed that among breast cancer survivors, higher coffee or tea consumption was associated with longer survival.

Researchers have analyzed the data in the Nurse Health Study (NHS) and the Nurse Health Study II (NHS II).
Involving 8900 women with stage I-III breast cancer aged 50 years and under.
Through the questionnaire, the researchers counted the subjects’ age, height, weight, amount of exercise, alcohol consumption, smoking status, age at first childbirth, age at menopause, history of hormone replacement therapy, history of oral contraceptives, and the diagnosis of breast cancer.
Information such as age, breast cancer stage, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment history.
At the same time, the frequency of consumption of different foods and beverages, including coffee and tea, before and after the diagnosis of breast cancer was also collected.
After the start of the study, the researchers will follow up the subjects every 4 years to update relevant information and count the deaths of the subjects.
During the average follow-up period of 12 years, a total of 2501 deaths occurred, of which 1054 subjects died of breast cancer.
Image source: After 123RF adjusted other influencing factors, researchers found that higher coffee or tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of death among breast cancer survivors.
Compared with subjects who do not drink coffee, drinking 2-3 cups (1 cup is about 240ml) of coffee per day reduces the risk of all-cause death by 24% and the risk of breast cancer-specific death (death from breast cancer) by 17% Related; drinking more than 3 cups of coffee a day is associated with a 26% reduction in the risk of all-cause death and a 25% reduction in the risk of breast cancer-specific death.
Compared with subjects who did not drink tea, drinking 2-3 cups of tea a day was associated with a 15% reduction in the risk of all-cause death and a 17% reduction in the risk of breast cancer-specific death (death from breast cancer); drinking more than 3 cups a day Tea is associated with a 26% reduction in the risk of all-cause death and a 20% reduction in the risk of breast cancer-specific death.
In addition, the researchers also found that there was no association between the amount of coffee or tea consumed before breast cancer was diagnosed and the risk of death.
Researchers analyzed that coffee or tea may have an impact on breast cancer survivors through a variety of mechanisms.
For example, coffee or tea contains caffeine and other phenolic compounds.
Laboratory studies have found that these substances help control the growth of cancer cells.
However, further research is needed to understand the details of coffee or tea's mechanism of action.
Image source: 123RF Since this study is an observational study, it only shows an association between drinking coffee or tea and a reduction in the risk of death in breast cancer patients, and does not show a causal relationship.
In other words, it is not certain that drinking coffee or tea must be the cause of the reduced risk of death for breast cancer survivors.
There are also limitations in the study.
For example, the amount of caffeine in coffee is not counted, and the amount of coffee consumed depends on the recall of subjects, which may have an impact on the results of the study. However, the researchers pointed out that the results of the study add evidence that "drinking coffee or tea is beneficial for breast cancer survivors.
"
Although the reason for the higher coffee or tea consumption and the reduced risk of death for breast cancer survivors is still uncertain, "drinking coffee or tea in moderation is beneficial to the survival of breast cancer survivors.
"
