Anglo-Dutch oil giant Royal Dutch Shell pledged on Thursday to become carbon neutral by 2050, in line with
    a pledge by rival BP.

Shell said: "In the debate around climate change, society's expectations have rapidly shifted
    .
Shell now needs to go further in line with its ambitions, which is why we aim to become a zero-emission energy company
    by 2050 or sooner.

Shell is the world's seventh-largest emitter of CO2 equivalent and has been reducing the net carbon footprint
of energy products sold to customers in recent years.
Shell aims to reduce emissions from these products by 65% by 2050 and has set an interim target
    of 30% for 2035.

    "These are extraordinary times
due to the severe impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on people's health and our economy," Shell said.
However, even in the challenging moments ahead, we must focus
    on the long term.
