According to energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie, global oil demand could peak
as early as 2036.
Global oil demand could peak as early as 2036
This suggests that a tectonic shift in the transportation sector towards electric and autonomous vehicles will occur within the next 20 years, earlier than many major energy companies predict in their scenario planning
.
Over the next decade, the biggest impact expected to have on the slowdown in global oil demand growth is fuel efficiency, as many older vehicles have been retired, reducing the number of high-fuel consuming vehicles
on the road.
As a result, Wood Mackenzie said, gasoline demand is expected to be the number one factor
for oil demand to peak around 2030.
Ed Rawle, head of crude oil research at Wood Mackenzie, said: "Many of our customers recognise that peak demand is real and it's only a matter of
time.
”
In the coming decades, autonomous electric vehicles or motor vehicles will truly change the face of transportation
.
"We assume that autonomous vehicles will be commercialized by 2030 and widely accepted by 2035, and each autonomous electric vehicle is expected to have a greater impact on curbing oil demand than conventional electric vehicles
.
" Rawle added
