The German government wants to increase offshore wind capacity fivefold by 2040 as part of
the country's plan to wean itself off fossil fuels.
Germany's cabinet on Wednesday agreed to a bill that sets a goal to increase offshore wind capacity to 40 GW from the current 7.
5 GW over 20 years
.
It also raised its 2030 target from 15 GW to 20 GW
.
German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said the new 2030 offshore wind target will help Germany meet its goal
of meeting 65% of its total electricity consumption with renewable energy within a decade.
Long-term goals will provide planning certainty for businesses and coastal areas
.
The number of turbines installed on land already dwarfs Germany's offshore wind power, with a total installed capacity of 54 GW
of turbines.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said she supported achieving the goal
of making Europe "climate neutral" by 2050 to curb global warming.
This ambitious goal will require the world's largest economic bloc to phase out the use of
fossil fuels.
Since renewable energy generated by wind and solar power plants fluctuates with the weather, one suggestion is to use excess electricity to produce hydrogen, which is easy to store, transport and burn without releasing greenhouse gases
