February 3, Nature published a paper online describing the analysis of the genome sequence of 2019-nCov by Zhang Yongzhen, a professor at the Shanghai Clinical Center for Public Health and fudan University's School of Public Health. The virus genome was obtained from a patient who worked in a seafood market where the first patients appeared. Genomic analysis showed that the virus was closely related to a group of SARS-like coronavirus previously found in Bats in China.

the authors sequenced the genome of bronch pipe vesicle irrigation lotions (pulmonary secretions) collected from patients. They identified a new type of virus and found that its genome was 89.1% similar to the SARS-like coronavirus found in bats.
authors say that while it is not possible to conclude from the analysis of individual patients that the coronavirus is the cause of the current outbreak, these findings have been confirmed by independent studies of other patients.
