Published in Cell Reports Medicine, the study identified mutations in key genes, including two previously undetected in Wilms tumor, that could provide the basis for better identification of those with relaps.

There are two main types of Wilms tumor based on histology, or how it looks under the microsco.

To better understand the genetic mechanisms underlying Wilms tumor recurrence, the researchers sequenced normal kidney or peripheral blood samples from primary tumors, recurrent tumors, and patients with good histology who recurred after Wilms tumor thera.

"One of the distinguishing features of this study is that it is a comprehensive analysis of the largest number of Wilms tumor recurrence samples to date," said lead author Elizabeth.
