    Four people have died in Guatemala after eating shellfish poisoning ,according to Food Safety New.
     
    The National Committee for the Monitoring and Control of Red Tides in Guatemala has issued an alert due to the presence of saxitoxin beyond the limit on the coasts of Tiquisate, Escuentra, Retalluleu and San Marc.
     
    Since the end of April, 34 people have been infected and three children and one adult have died, public health officials sa.
     
    Authorities are urging the public not to eat bivalve mollusks such as mussels, clams and oyste.
     
    Saxitoxin is a toxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), an excess of "saxitoxin" in shellfish organisms caused by red tides in Pacific coastal wate.
     
    Saxitoxin affects the nervous system and symptoms usually appear within 30 minut.
    Severity depends on the amount of toxin ingest.
    The initial reaction was a tingling of the lips and tongue that spread to the face, neck, fingertips and toes, followed by headache, dizziness and naus.
    Muscle paralysis and difficulty breathing may appear within 5 to 12 hou.
     
    Officials said people with any of the above symptoms should go to the nearest health center immediately for treatme.
    Patients were told not to self-medicate because all services were fr.
     
    Affected shellfish taste and look indistinguishable from safe shellfish, and cooking will not destroy toxi.
    The Ministry of Health reminds the public to improve their awareness of prevention and try to avoid eating shellfish and aquatic products to prevent poisoni.
