Interferon plays an important role in activating the body's response to the virus threat, but abnormal levels of interferon have also been found in the lesions of many patients with psoriasis

Researchers used mice to simulate psoriasis and found that changing the level of interferon kappa produced by skin cells can change the severity of inflammation and the production of cell signaling molecules (called cytokines).

The results of the study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology indicate that the use of therapies that regulate the state of interferon may limit inflammation in patients with psoriasis

"We already know that psoriasis inflammation is characterized by interferon-related gene expression, but how interferon changes the severity of the disease is unclear," J.

The research team induced psoriasis in mouse models and divided them into groups with low, normal, or elevated interferon levels

Mehrnaz Gharaee-Kermani, MD, Master of Public Health, the lead author of the study and an expert in the Advanced Research Laboratory of Michigan Medicine said: "This work shows how the environment of the skin environment affects the inflammatory response

The research team is conducting further research to understand the role of interferon kappa in patients with psoriasis, through their Taubman Institute sponsored Michigan School of Medicine, and in collaboration with Johann E.

Some psoriasis drugs currently inhibit interferon, but many more specific drugs are still in the experimental stage

Kahlenberg said: "So far, the treatment is to study a drug on hundreds of patients, pool the average level of all patients, and test the average level of these patients
