    According to the preliminary estimates of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ( FAO ), Costa Rica's annual food waste can reach about 365,000 tons, and the average person will waste about 73 kilograms of food each year

    Costa Rica’s La Nation reported on October 25 that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recently released a report stating that 11.
    6% of food in Latin America and the Caribbean is wasted every year
    .
    Based on the overall data of the Laga region, it is estimated that the amount of food waste in Costa Rica can reach about 365,000 tons per year
    .
    On average, each Costa Rican wastes about 73 kilograms of food every year
    .
     
    The FAO stated that the specific data will not be released to the public until the middle of 2022.
    Currently, FAO is working with the Agricultural Programme Executive Secretariat (Sepsa) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica to collect specific data

    Mercedes Montero Vega (Mercedes MoNtero Vega explained that factors such as lack of planning for family food purchases, improper preservation and processing of food and other factors ultimately lead to a large amount of food being wasted, and the problem of food waste in restaurants and hotels is also very serious
