Finland has become the latest country to step up its coal phase-out plan, bringing forward a ban on undiminished coal power by a year to 2029
.
The country's parliament reportedly approved a new phase-out date
of May 1, 2029 last week.
The vote comes after Environment Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen unveiled a series of new measures detailing how the country is moving forward with its pre-2030 coal phase-out date
.
The move could lead the government to introduce new subsidy schemes to incentivize energy companies to phase out fossil fuel use
.
Tiilikainen has previously said the country is one of the founding members of the Powering Past Coal Coal coalition and could bring forward its phase-out date to 2025
.
Broader legislation is expected later this year to support the government's 10-year energy plan and will include new incentives and a package of support to help coal companies move away from fossil fuels
.
The report shows that the government will introduce a 90 million euro package to reward energy companies
that move away from coal by 2025.
In addition, there are plans to promote the development of renewable energy, provide planned new nuclear reactors and other plans
to expand the country's already sizeable district heating network.
Finland gets about 10 percent of its electricity from coal, and the government is keen to curb emissions and reduce its dependence on
imported Russian energy.
