The same person who pushed for the idea that "sitting for too much doesn't mean exercising too much" now has a breakthrough discovery that will revolutionize the sedentary lifestyle: the flounder muscle in the calf, although only 1% of your body weight, can go a long way
toward improving metabolic health in other parts of the body, if activated correctly.
Marc Hamilton, a professor of health and human behavior at the University of Houston, has discovered one of the best activation methods — he pioneered the "Flounder Muscle Push-ups" (SPU), which can effectively boost muscle metabolism for hours, even while
sitting.
Published in iScience, Hamilton's research shows that soleus muscle push-ups are able to maintain elevated oxidative metabolism to improve blood sugar regulation and are more effective than any popular method currently touted as a solution, including exercise, weight loss, and intermittent fasting
.

Muscle biopsy shows very little
glycogen that fuels the flounder muscle.
He added: "The soleus muscle is less dependent on glycogen than normal, which helps it to work effortlessly for hours without fatigue in this muscular activity, as glycogen consumption leads to a definite limitation
of muscle endurance.
When the SPU was tested, the systemic effects on blood chemistry included a 52% improvement in blood sugar (sugar) fluctuations and a 60%
reduction in insulin requirements within three hours of ingestion of glucose-containing beverages.

Building on years of research, Hamilton and his colleagues developed the flounder muscle push-up, which activates the flounder muscle differently than when standing or walking

In short, when the feet are flat on the floor and the muscles relax, the heels rise while the forefoot remains stationary

According to the researchers, while the SSU's movements look like walking (although it is performed while sitting), it is actually quite the opposite

Hamilton called it "the most important study" he completed at the University of Houston's Metabolic Innovation Lab, and said the discovery could address a variety of health issues
caused by spending hours a day living in an environment with undermetabolism of muscles.
Regardless of a person's level of physical activity, sitting for a long time has been shown to increase the risk of
heart disease, diabetes, dementia and other diseases.
A low metabolic rate while sitting for a long time is especially troublesome
for those at high risk of age-related metabolic diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
Inactive muscles require less energy than most people understand, "one of the most basic but overlooked problems," guiding the exploration of metabolic solutions to help prevent some age-related chronic diseases

"Within 3 hours of carbohydrate intake, all 600 muscles together contributed only about 15 percent of the system's oxidative metabolism

Although the soleus muscle is only 1% of body weight, it is able to increase the metabolic rate during SPU contraction, easily doubling and sometimes tripling
