GlobeNet, a leading telecommunications infrastructure service provider in the Americas, and Facebook of the United States have announced that the new submarine cable system GlobeNet, announced in May this year, will be jointly owned and operated
by GlobeNet.
The Malbec submarine cable system, named after Argentina's famous wine, is about 2,500 kilometers long, connecting Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, and will have a branch line connecting Porto Alegre, Brazil, thus connecting Argentina to GlobeNet's network in Brazil and achieving a seamless connection
to the United States.
When completed, it will be the first emerging international submarine cable system
to connect Argentina since 2001.
"We are excited to partner with Facebook," said Eduardo Falzoni, CEO of GlobeNet, "and Argentina should have the most advanced infrastructure to meet the pressing needs
of the coming years.
" This project is a testament to our competence, expertise and commitment
in the region where we have been operating for 15 years.
”
Taking advantage of the latest developments in fiber optics, the Malbec submarine cable system will be equipped with six pairs of fibers, providing Argentina with double its international bandwidth capacity and high-speed access to social media content, streaming and cloud services
.
The two companies have confirmed that the contract with the supplier is currently in effect and that the submarine cable system will be commissioned in the first half of 2020
