Japanese ophthalmic pharmaceutical company Santen has announced plans to launch the first bio-based plastic eye drop bottle in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as part of Santen's commitment to achieving zero carbon emissions
.
The plastic material of this eye drop bottle is made from a sugar cane derivative called "I Am Green Polyethylene"
.
The biomaterial maintains the structural integrity of the bottle like traditional petroleum-based plastics, ensuring stable and safe delivery of drugs to patients
.
It is understood that this bio-based eye drop bottle has been launched in Japan in June 2021 and will be launched in the EMEA region in early 2023
.
According to reports, Santian has launched its "2050 Vision" for the protection of earth resources in the first half of 2021, set a scientific plan to reduce carbon emissions, and formulated three "environmental goals" for 2030 - to do for a carbon-free society sharing, protecting water resources and reducing plastic use
.
The adoption of bio-based plastic bottles is an important step towards achieving these goals
.
Santen emphasized that the company's medium- and long-term carbon emissions targets are aimed at meeting the relevant provisions of the Paris Climate Agreement, which is to " limit global temperature rise to well below pre-industrial levels of 2°C, preferably 1.
5°C"
