According to statistics, neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children
Clinically, an open or percutaneous needle biopsy is usually required to determine the cytogenetics of neuroblastoma
Diffusion-weighted imaging quantifies the random motion of protons in the body
Recently, a study published in the journal European Radiology evaluated the role of whole-tumor apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) histogram analysis in identifying MYCN amplification status in neuroblastoma for a noninvasive, accurate, and comprehensive preoperative assessment of neuroblastoma.
This study retrospectively evaluated the imaging records of 62 patients with neuroblastoma (median age: 15 months (interquartile range (IQR): 7-24 months); 38 women) who were Magnetic resonance imaging was performed at this institution prior to initiation of any treatment or biopsy
MYCN-amplified neuroblastomas had statistically significantly higher maximal ADCs and lower minimal ADCs compared to non-amplified neuroblastomas, and also exhibited higher maximal ADCs than non-amplified tumors.
The present study provides preliminary retrospective data on the role of ADC histogram parameters in predicting MYCN-amplification
