When we were young, our parents told us to eat vitamins so that we could grow big and strong
.
Now, in a new study, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have found that a dietary supplement can greatly reverse the signs of heart disease in a subset of
patients 。 The results of the study were published online on December 30, 2022 in the journal European Heart Journal under the title "Remarkable regression of diffuse coronary atherosclerosis in patients with triglyceride deposit cardiomyovasculopathy
。
Coronary artery disease (CAD), which involves narrowing or even closing the arteries of the heart and often leading to heart attacks, is one of the leading causes of
death worldwide.
Despite the existence of treatments such as cholesterol-lowering drugs and drug-eluting stents, deaths from the disease are still common, and some patients appear to be resistant to treatment
.
Dr.
Ken-ichi Hirano of Osaka University, corresponding author of the paper, said, "Almost 15 years ago, we discovered a new type of CAD called triglyceride deposition cardiovascular disease (TGCV), in which the coronary arteries are blocked
by triglyceride deposits produced by defects in the intracellular breakdown of triglycerides in vascular smooth muscle cells.
This mechanism distinguishes TGCV from classic cholesterol-induced atherosclerosis and explains those patients
who are resistant to standard therapies for CAD.
”
Scientists have developed diagnostic criteria for TGCV and shown that the disease is particularly prevalent
in people with diabetes and those who have undergone hemodialysis.
However, despite the ability to diagnose the disease, effective treatment for these patients remains far away
.
Hirano said, "Today, we report significant resolution
of diffuse coronary atherosclerosis in two TGCV patients.
Both patients had refractory chest pain and diabetes prior to being diagnosed with TGCV, followed by dietary intake of tricaprin, which led to symptom relief
.
”
Tridecylglycerol is a commercially available food supplement that promotes the breakdown
of lipids in cardiomyocytes.
In addition to relieving the painful symptoms of these patients, tridecylglycerol also significantly reduces the accumulation of triglycerides in the blood vessels of the heart
.
TGCV is an emerging cardiovascular disease characterized by defects in intracellular lipolysis caused by diffuse stenosis of coronary atherosclerosis and triglyceride (TG) deposition
.

.
"While atherosclerotic resolution after a decrease in serum lipid levels is well described, this is the first report of atherosclerotic resolution due to increased triglyceride lipolysis and is therefore a conceptually novel treatment
for coronary atherosclerosis," Hirano said.
”
Given that not all patients respond to current CAD treatments, the results of this new study pave the way
for a multi-faceted CAD treatment approach.
The remarkable results achieved through the use of an off-the-shelf dietary supplement offer hope
for those patients who will continue to suffer the debilitating effects of this disease.
