On February 14, 2018, the European Union issued a new regulation through its official gazette to further restrict the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in certain food contact materials.
The European Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/213 focuses on the limit of bisphenol A in varnishes and coatings that may come into contact with food, and is an amendment to the previous Regulation (EU) No10/2011, which is related to food contact Plastic materials regulations, the latest regulations put forward the migration limit (SML) index of BPA in varnishes and coatings, and revised the SML value of BPA in plastic materials in the previous regulations.
Specifically, the European Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/213 established an SML limit standard of 0.
Regarding the revision of the Plastics Regulation (EU) No10/2011, the new BPA regulation reduces the SML of BPA from the previous 0.
The regulation also stipulates that operators should ensure that paint or coating materials and articles must be accompanied by a written declaration of conformity (DoC), which applies to all stages of production, processing and distribution except the retail stage.
The new BPA regulations will come into effect on September 6, 2018.
