The EU has agreed to increase the share of renewables in energy production to 32%
by 2030.
EU agrees to increase share of renewables to 32% by 2030
This increase is based on the previous 27% target, which the European Parliament and some governments are pursuing is too low
.
The agreement also includes plans to review by 2023 whether the target
should be further raised.
The new target will support the EU's overall goal
of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
Miguel Arias Canete, EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, said: "The increase in target is a rare victory
for us to unlock the true potential of Europe's clean energy transition.
This new goal will help us achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and translate them into more jobs, lower energy costs for consumers, and fewer energy imports
.
In addition, the binding nature of the target will also provide investors with more
certainty.
