Supercritical fluids and, in particular, supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO

) are a promising alternative to the use of organic media in enzymatic catalysis (

Chapter 24 and Chapter 25). Among the advantages associated with SCCO
2
are its nontoxicity, nonflammability, and relative cheapness. In addition, diffusivities in SCCO
2
are high, and the SC fluid offers the possibility of an integrated separation process (
