Chilean power company Enel Chile SA (NYSE:ENIC) and its generation subsidiary Enel Generacion Chile SA (FRA:EPN) have decided to close their last coal-fired power plant in 2022 in order to complete their decarbonization plan
sooner than previous agreements with the Chilean government.
The news was announced Thursday by parent company Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL), which said Enel Generacion would make a request to Chile's National Energy Commission (CNE) to shut down two generators
at the Bocamina plant.
As part of the national decarbonization plan signed with Chile's Ministry of Energy last year, 128 MW of Bocamina I will be taken offline by the end of 2023 and 350 MW of Bocamina II by 2040 at the
latest.
Enel Chile will now seek to close the Bocamina I power generation facility by December 31, 2020 and cease operations to Bocamina II by May 31
, 2022.
At the Enel Group level, Enel said, the two divisions have a net book value of about 790 million euros ($871.
9 million), including demolition costs
.
In 2019, Chile's Enel Generacion requested and received CNE approval to disconnect the 158 MW coal-fired unit
at the Tarapaca power plant about five months ahead of the agreed timeline.
The unit rolled off the production line
on December 31, 2019.
"We will be the first power company in Chile to completely exit the coal sector, while continuing to safely build renewable generation capacity and achieve concrete benefits from an environmental, economic and social point of view, which is fully in line with our Group's decarbonization strategy", said
Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Global Power Generation at Enel.
By the time Bocamina II closes in 2022, Enel Chile will be preparing 2 GW of renewable energy capacity
.
Half of them are already under construction, including a hybrid power plant
that combines a 60.
9 MW Azabache solar park with a 90 MW Val de los Vientos wind farm, the company said.
Enel added that the 382 MW Campos del Sol solar project and the 48 MW Cerro Pabellon geothermal power plant are still under construction for a 33 MW expansion, the only such operating facility
in South America.
