India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) released new installation statistics for April 2018, saying rooftop solar PV systems reached 40 MW, well below the expected target of 200 MW
.
This is not the first time that rooftop solar in India has fallen short of expectations
.
In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, connected rooftop solar installations performed poorly, reaching 352.
83 megawatts at the target of 1,000 megawatts
.
Notably, in 2017-2018, the central government has lowered its rooftop solar target from 5,000MW to 1,000MW.
The cumulative figures (as of April 30, 2018) are also discouraging
.
So far, India has only achieved 1065.
41 MW in the rooftop solar segment, while ground-mounted solar installations are increasing, with cumulative statistics showing 20819.
64 MW
.
As part of the world's largest renewable energy expansion plan, India aims to generate 175 GW of energy from renewable sources by 2022, with solar power reaching 100 GW and rooftop solar accounting for 40 GW
.
This means that in four years, India is expected to have 38 solar parks selling electricity to state-owned power distribution companies to supply end-users
.
Renewable energy investment needs of 175GW are expected to reach Rs.
12,500 crore
