According to a new study, a cell-based influenza vaccine has effectively provided protection against influenza for children and adolescents

The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrated for the first time the absolute efficacy of cell-based influenza vaccines for two-year-old children
    .

This randomized controlled study involved 4,514 participants from Australia, Thailand, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Poland, Spain and the Philippines
    .

The total efficacy of the vaccine was 54.

QIVc uses a cell-based influenza vaccine production process instead of the traditional egg-based production process
    .

However, this may cause mutations in the influenza virus, resulting in an antigenic mismatch between the circulating reference strain and the inactivated strain contained in the seasonal influenza vaccine

Professor Nolan said that because cell-based influenza vaccines cultured in animal cells are designed to match the influenza strains selected by the World Health Organization by avoiding changes in egg adaptation, they may provide greater efficacy
    .

Professor Nolan said that cell vaccine technology may also provide additional advantages, including increased scalability and production speed during a pandemic
    .

In a typical year, 5% to 15% of the world’s population is infected with influenza, and as many as 650,000 people die from respiratory-related diseases
    .

Death most often occurs in high-risk groups, including young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health problems
