On October 12, Covestro started construction of a new world-class aniline production facility
in Antwerp, Belgium.
Covestro will invest more than EUR 300 million in this and plans to put the plant into operation
by 2025.
Covestro said that the basic chemical aniline is an important initial raw material for many chemical products, and diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) is its downstream product
.
Covestro expects the global MDI market to grow by around
6 percent annually in the medium term.
Given the current high electricity and natural gas prices, especially in Europe, the demand for insulation materials for MDI's downstream products is likely to increase
further.
The expansion of aniline capacity is therefore part of Covestro's global MDI strategy, which aims to strengthen MDI's production network to cope with further demand growth
.
Georg Wagner, site manager in Antwerp at Covestro, says the investment is a key step
into the future.
"Aniline production is an important milestone
for our production site.
The capacity expansion will enable us to continue to ensure a sustainable and efficient supply
of the MDI production network in Europe.
