As a member of the Chinese National Standards Drafting Committee for Recycled Polycarbonate, Covestro joins hands with domestic recycling value chain partners to jointly formulate the Chinese National Standard for Recycled Polycarbonate

As one of the world's largest plastic producers, China is taking a variety of measures to promote domestic plastic recycling, while prohibiting or restricting the use of single-use plastic products

Unified national standards establish quality specifications for post-consumer and post-industrial recycled polycarbonate

The new national standard has formulated corresponding specifications for the quality and performance requirements of post-consumer and post-industrial recycled polycarbonate

In addition, it also stipulates the testing methods, packaging, transportation and storage conditions of recycled materials to ensure that recycled products can be handled correctly throughout the value chain

Wu Weiting, the global project manager for mechanical recycling of Covestro's Engineering Plastics Division, said that the development of unified standards is crucial, which can not only strengthen the polycarbonate recycling value chain, but also promote the downstream application of these recycled materials

She emphasized that to convert polycarbonate waste into high-quality recycled materials, strict quality control procedures must be passed to improve the quality and traceability of recycled materials.
At the same time, close cooperation between all parties in the value chain is required

After the products made of polycarbonate are scrapped, they first need to be collected, sorted, shredded and cleaned by recycling companies, and then processed into pellets

Previously, Covestro has worked with beverage supplier Nongfu Spring and recycling company Auxerre to achieve a closed loop of material use through business model innovation

Through this cooperation, the three parties have further optimized the recycling efficiency of Nongfu Spring’s 19-liter polycarbonate bucket and improved the traceability and quality of recycled materials
