According to Indian media reports, the submarine cable system connecting Chennai to Andaman and the Nicobar Islands will begin installation in December, reaching a total length of 2,300 kilometers
.
Japan's NEC has signed a construction contract with BSNL, an Indian telecommunications service provider, to design, supply, install and commission the submarine cable system
.
An NEC spokesperson confirmed by email that construction of the submarine cable system will begin in December and is scheduled to be completed
by the end of March 2020.
The project aims to support voice and data connectivity to implement e-government initiatives, assist educational institutions in sharing knowledge, and ensure the provision of services
such as e-government to citizens.
Asked what precautions the company has taken to ensure marine life is not affected by the project, a spokesperson said: "Before we can start laying the submarine cable, we first need to obtain government permission and conduct a marine survey
of the area through which the inverted cable passes.
In order to obtain these permits and successfully complete the survey, we must take into account environmental conditions such as marine life and habitats
