On October 20, Clariant announced that it will invest CHF 40 million to build a second production line at its Exolit OP halogen-free flame retardant plant in Daya Bay, Guangdong Province, supporting the significant growth of engineering plastics in electric vehicles and electrical and electronics
.
Clariant sees from the rapidly growing demand for Exolit OP flame retardants in China and other Asian markets that brands and equipment manufacturers are increasingly turning to halogen-free flame retardants to meet growing electrification needs and sustainability requirements
, said An Yuheng, Head of Clariant's Flame Retardants business 。 "Clariant's local production and technical expert support in Daya Bay, combined with the R&D capabilities of Clariant's One Park Technology Center in Shanghai, will enable us to respond more quickly to local, regional and global supply needs and work more closely with customers to meet increasing safety regulations and technical performance requirements
in electric vehicles, 5G communications, transportation and other sectors," he said.
”
The new flame retardant plant in Daya Bay costs CHF 60 million and is currently under
full construction.
The additional CHF 40 million investment will further expand innovative and sustainable flame retardant solutions and related expertise, while further complementing Clariant's capacity outside of its two Exolit OP plants in Knapsack, Germany, benefiting
its global customer base.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic and supply chain challenges, Clariant is striving to advance the construction of the plant according to the original schedule, so that the new plant will be put into operation in Daya Bay in mid-2023 and the second production line will be put into operation
in 2024, An Yueheng said.
Clariant will produce its patented organic phosphine flame retardant
worldwide.
The Clariant Verbund Shanghai team will support
customers in the joint development and application testing of flame retardant solutions.
The two new flame retardant production lines will share the infrastructure and construction capabilities
of Clariant's Daya Bay plant.
Daya Bay Factory makes full use of local resources, attaches great importance to safety issues, and has achieved 500,000 working hours without accidents
since the start of construction.
